As you all know a great way to learn English is to talk to yourself whilst doing everyday tasks. Cooking is something most of us do every day and it’s great to talk through what you’re doing as part of your daily English practise.

With that in mind, here are some common verbs you may need to help you progress whilst whipping together some wonderful grub.


Cooking Verbs list

To simmer 
When liquid (or food) is heated being heated and kept just below boiling point

To blend
When products are mixed together. Often in a mixing machine (a blender)

To boil
When liquid (or food) is heated to 100” and is bubbling.

To slice
A little like chopping, but it is a smooth, more precise motion.

To bake (cakes and pastries)
this is how you describe food thrown in the oven to cook over time

To roast (meat and poultries)
See above. The same as bake but changes depending on what you are cooking.

To chop
This is cutting up food quickly in chunks or cubs. Hard and fast cutting.

To steam
Steaming works by boiling water continuously and using the steam (vapours) to cook the food.

To fry
Flying pan out, touch of oil and in it goes.

To grill (BBQ)
Grilled food means it was cooked on an open flame.
